Phoenix

Phoenix is an Unmanned Air Vehicle Battlefield Surveillance and Targeting System in service with the Royal Artillery. The Air Vehicle, which is of GRP construction, carries a turret-mounted IR sensor payload, is launched from a truck/mounted pneumatic/hydraulic catapult and recovered by parachute using an airbag to absorb the impact of ground contact. In flight, a two-way J-band datalink enables control from a truck-mounted Ground Control Station by commanded autonomous manoeuvres.

The prime contractor for the Phoenix system is BAE Systems Avionics. FRL is a major sub-contractor, with design and support responsibility for the Air Vehicle, Launcher, Recovery Vehicle Installation and the Battlefield Containers in which the system is transported.

Phoenix has seen extensive deployment in a number of operational theatres, such as the Balkans and the Gulf, in support of both offensive and peacekeeping operations.
